Shows Through The Eyes of a Sales Professional

Face-to-face contact is more important than ever in today’s business ever changing business environment because, among other things:

Most products, services and solutions are perceived as commodities

Mergers and acquisitions which have:

Customers wondering “Who am I doing business with anyway…”

Employees wondering if they have a job, and how to best do it

Most customers can’t define their best suppliers’ current capabilities

Most employees can’t properly answer the question “Tell me a little bit about your company...”

When you combine these points (and the many others that can be made about our evolving global business environment), it’s no wonder that salespeople are stereotyped as disliking shows. The stereotype conveys, among other things, salespeople don’t:

Want to be at the show or event because it’s a waste of time;

Have time to staff an exhibit and do all of the other things that need to be done;

Want to invite their customers because their competitors will be there; and

Ever get any good leads (in their territory).

Like most stereotypes, this one isn’t necessarily true. More and more, salespeople and sales managers are recognizing that shows and events have evolved from marketing events into marketing and sales events and are the one and only time many prospects and customers will ever have face-to-face contact with anyone from your company. Shows and events as sales activities are, more than ever, the most cost-effective and time-efficient way to:

Create sales opportunities with both existing and new customers;

Diff ..

What is the Right Value Proposition?

In every workshop I conduct you’ll here me say “Find out about them (the buyer) before you tell them about you (the seller).”

It might be a workshop for exhibit managers on how to play a more of a strategic role; or a negotiating skills workshop for professional salespeople; or it might be a program for exhibit workers on how to conduct show floor interactions. It really doesn’t matter which workshop it is because the quote – and more importantly its meaning – are universally true.

If you find out about the buyer – who they are, what they’re trying to accomplish, what’s important and why it’s important etc. you’ll have a much better idea of what to tell them about you, your show and event program or company, your capabilities, the solutions you sell – in other words, your value proposition.

Selling isn’t telling. It’s probing and listening and developing at least a preliminary understanding if not insight into what’s important to the customer – what’s of value – before you convey your value proposition. If you convey your value proposition before you know what’s important to your customer, you run the risk of jeopardizing your competitive posture. Why? Because your customer might respond to your value proposition by saying
Thanks for sharing that – but I have to tell you – that’s really not important to me.
If this happens, you’ve dug yourself a hole that would be pretty difficult to get out of. One of the most difficult lessons for all of us to learn is that we don’t define value. Our internal and external customers do.

Each of us has a professional responsibility to educate and inform our customers about the options that exist to meet their needs, solve their problems or help them accomplish their goals. Each of us also has an obligation to explain the pros and cons of each ..

The War For Talent

Apart from his own blog, Bob Sutton has a blog on the Harvard Business School Online
Site

(Actually, he co-hosts other blogs as well, but let’s not go
there because I’m intimidated enough already!)

On the HBS site, he announces that “The War For Talent Is
Back” (did it go away?) and offers five lessons for discussion:

  1. Superstars
    are overrated
    .
  2. Great
systems are more important than great people
    .
  3. Create
smaller rather than larger pay differences between “star” employees and
    everyone else
    .
  4. The
    law of crappy people (
great people will hire other great people, but
mediocre people will hire even worse people because they are threatened by
competent people) is probably a myth.
  5. The
    no asshole rule helps
    .

Here are some of my lessons / propositions for winning the
war for talent:

  1. In hiring, never let the pursuit of volume get in the way of
    maintaining the highest possible standards.
  2. People want the opportunity to learn and grow: you must
actively work to provide a variety of stretching, challenging experiences.
  3. Standards of people supervision and management are as
important as standards of product or service quality: they should be monitored
and enforced in the same way.
  4. Firms that try to win by hiring pre-existing, already-formed
talent will never do as well as firms that are skilled in building talented
    people.
  5. Talent is over-rated: character and energy count for more.

***

What are some of your lessons for winning the war for
talent?

What's Our Deal?

I have a new article on my website called "What's Our Deal?" It's about "doing strategy" and it begins:

"At a recent conference, I heard a number of successful firm leaders
describe how their firms had achieved significant growth and
profitability. A common phrase used by each and every one of these firm
leaders was “making sure that all the key people were ‘on the same
page.’”

Clearly, it was important that something was agreed
to and shared among the members of these firms. But what? What does
“being on the same page” really mean? And how is it done?"

To find out my views, you can read the article.

But what are YOUR views?

Marketing Paradox

The sales people need to have a mechanism that they can take the great intrinsic value companies have and translate it in the field to prospects who understand it and will pay for it.

The Fundamental Shift

Bill Caskey and Bryan Neale, sales innovators present a fundamentally different approach to the art of sales. They challenge the sales professional to believe in themselves and to bring value and integrity to any sales environment.

The 11th Commandment: The Prospect Shall Not Bear False Witness

In this podcast, Bill and Bryan take a call from a sales person

BUT, they only become liars if the salesperson MAKES them lie by
approaching them in the wrong way.

What about you? Are you getting lies from your prospects?

You will get plenty of tips in this podcast on how to create an
environment for the truth. It's the thing most sales people miss.

They also talk about "what you should never say" as a seller in
business to business selling.

Bryan also introduces the topic of "the worst sales experience"
as a buyer. Call us at 1.317.722.6299 and leave a message.

Also, they address the ever-important issue of 'what constitutes an ideal client?' They give you usable tips on how to discern a good prospect from a lousy one.

And, as always, a little humor (very little).

Tom Searcy of The Whale Hunters, gives you advice on how to look at the world differently--which allows you to pursue larger accounts. This is an episode you'll want to listen to over and over for optimum learning.

How to Call at the Right Level

There are many ways to go about approaching the C-Level executives of a prospect company; in this podcast, Bill and Brian teach you how to navigate through the lower level employees to get a meeting with the executives of that company. Also, all new, is the "How to Handle It" section of our podcast. In this week's "How to Handle It" section, you learn what to do when you reach the top-level executive and they refer you to a lower-level employee. This is an important episode that you and your sales people can't miss.

Want to be at the show or event because it’s a waste of time;

Have time to staff an exhibit and do all of the other things that need to be done;

Create sales opportunities with both existing and new customers;

During the past two decades, Google had acquired YouTube for $1.65, DoubleClick for $3.1 billion, AOL for $12.5 billion, and last year, Microsoft for the record sum of $120 billion ..."

Build on Newroo technology (acquired March 2006 by Fox Interactive) ...

Among the major newspapers that have already closed their Canadian bureaus are the Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and The New York Times which now relies on two stringers for its coverage of its northern neighbour ..." more

Forrester’s Social Technographics Report

Charlene Li announced on her blog a new Forrester study on

Social Technographics

Mapping Participation In Activities Forms The Foundation Of A Social Strategy

by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff, Remy Fiorentino, Sarah Glass

From the executive summary:

"Many companies approach social computing as a list of technologies to be deployed as needed – a blog here, a podcast there – to achieve a marketing goal. But a more coherent approach is to start with your target audience and determine what kind of relationship you want to build with them, based on what they are ready for. Forrester categorizes social computing behaviors into a ladder with six levels of participation; we use the term "Social Technographics" to describe analyzing a population according to its participation in these levels. Brands, Web sites, and any other company pursuing social technologies should analyze their customers' Social Technographics first, and then create a social strategy based on that profile ..."

Part 3: Interview with Roger Fidler

Roger (Reynolds Journalism Institute) predicts in this interview that 'after years of cautious experimentation and limited interest from the industry, now we will sees the breakthrough years' of electronic device based ePaper approaching.

My take on this:

No way! Your potential readers still (and for a long, long time) have a very limited interest in buying and using such a ePaper device!

No bid for eBay

Legendary creator of the online auction eBay announced it will close its Chinese site and enter into a partnership with Tom Online of Hong Kong. Together the two companies will create a new online auction site for the Chinese market next year. Although the company is known all over the world for its service, the move came as no surprise to those following its progress in China. eBay was consistently beat by Alibaba’s Taobao site, which controls 57% of the Chinese online auction market.
